The Atlantic City Police Department’s (ACPD) mission is simple. Promote public safety; prevent, suppress and investigate crimes; provide emergency and non-emergency services; create and maintain strong community partnerships; adapt a multi-disciplinary approach to solving community problems; and develop and promote a diverse, professional workforce. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, and retired police officers to perform virtual patrols, ACPD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) is deterring crime and transforming how public safety is performed in this busy tourist town.
The Atlantic City Police Department is committed to public safety through crime prevention, rapid response, and strong community partnerships. To enhance its Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), ACPD leverages cutting-edge technology and retired officers conducting virtual patrols. However, as surveillance capabilities expanded, so did the challenge of effectively managing vast amounts of video data.
After deploying crime cameras throughout the city in 2016, ACPD received a state grant in 2023 to expand its surveillance network further. In addition to monitoring “ShotSpotter” for gunfire detection and “MutuaLink” for instant casino security integration, ACPD also operates Project P.A.C.T., which enables local businesses to share their camera feeds.
With thousands of public and private video sources, ACPD needed a more efficient way to visualize, manage, and distribute real-time data. Their existing system of five 85” digital displays, each powered by separate PCs, limited situational awareness and slowed response times. ACPD turned to Visual Sound to modernize its control room and optimize public safety operations.
After assessing ACPD’s 24/7 surveillance hub, ACHILES (Atlantic City Headquarters for Intelligence, Logistics, and Electronic Surveillance), Visual Sound designed a custom video wall solution to enhance operational efficiency and situational awareness.
Large-Scale LED Video Wall
Visual Sound installed a 29′ x 6′ Planar MGP Series Direct View LED video wall with a 1.5mm pixel pitch for superior clarity and visibility. With a total resolution of 5760 x 1080, the display offers seamless image quality, ADA compliance, and a thin 4″ profile for front-side installation and serviceability.
Advanced Video Wall Management
At the heart of the system is VuWall’s TRx centralized software platform, which simplifies video wall control, AV distribution, and operator collaboration in a single interface. The drag-and-drop functionality enables operator personnel to quickly configure, save, and recall multiple layouts while integrating with touch control panels for streamlined operation.
The upgraded control room was delivered on time, on budget, and without disruption to operations. Utilizing the Hunterdon County ESC cooperative purchasing agreement, ACPD secured technology and installation at a set discount rate.
All personnel were trained on the new system, including preset configurations for instant deployment of surveillance layouts. Additionally, ACPD opted for an enhanced service plan, ensuring ongoing maintenance, rapid repairs, and maximum system uptime.
Shortly after installation, Visual Sound further upgraded the center’s sound system using Biamp audio solutions, improving communication and situational awareness. The feedback from surveillance operators has been overwhelmingly positive — officers can now analyze footage more efficiently, capture high-quality suspect images, and disseminate critical information faster than ever before.
